Banks in New York Times

David Walter Banks spent some time at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga. recently photographing the final weeks of the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program.  The program bases it’s structure after a U.S. Army basic training company, and cadets are trained in traditional drill, ceremony, courtesies, teamwork and military leadership.

On the academic side, the program teaches life skills to help cadets in their future adult obligations while they work towards their GED (Georgia High School Equivalency Diploma).  Cadets who qualify are also eligible to take college courses offered by local college and technical institutions, and are paired up with a mentor to work with after their completion of the program.
