Matt Eich and Matt Slaby both had winning images in this year’s American Photography 25 competition. Eich had three images selected for the book and Slaby had two images chosen for the website. Check them out alongside the other winners.

Banks and Eich win in Magenta Foundation Flash Forward 2009
Posted in Awards with tags award, Banks, bright spark, eich, emerging photographers, flash forward, the magenta foundation on May 7, 2009 by luceoimagesDavid Walter Banks and Matt Eich were both recognized in this year’s Magenta Foundation Flash Forward 2009 census of emerging photographers from Canada, the UK, and USA. Banks was one of the selected artists from the USA and Eich won the Bright Spark Award, the competition’s grand prize of $5,000 CAD. Their work will be viewable in the 2009 Flash Forward book that will be published later in the year and in the traveling exhibitions of the winning images.

Matt Eich selected for 16th World Press Joop Swart Masterclass
Posted in Awards with tags eich, joop swart masterclass, matt eich, world press photo on May 4, 2009 by luceoimagesTwelve young photographers have been selected to come together with a group of masters for the 16th annual World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass to be held from 30 October to 5 November 2009 in Foam_Fotografiemuseum, Amsterdam. The 12 participants were selected among 179 candidates who had been nominated to submit their portfolios. During the masterclass meeting in November, the participant photographers will interact with six prominent experts, discussing technical, journalistic and ethical aspects of their work.
The following 12 photographers were selected to participate in the masterclass 2009:

The participants were selected by an independent, international selection committee consisting of: Walter Astrada (Argentina) freelance photographer, Nan Goldin (USA) art and documentary photographer, Jan Grarup (Denmark) photographer Noor, Santiago Lyon (USA) director of photography The Associated Press, Jenny Smets (The Netherlands) photo editor Vrij Nederland, Anne Tucker (USA) curator of photography The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
In preparation for the meeting, the participants will execute a photo essay on one single theme, which for this year is: “Touch”. The essays will be discussed during sessions with the masters and edited into a publication.
The Joop Swart Masterclass has been organized by World Press Photo every year since 1994. Its goal is to bring together some of the most experienced individuals in photojournalism with 12 young, promising photographers so that they can share and pass on their knowledge and experience. From the beginning of the program a total of 176 young photographers have participated in the program, many of them moving on to establish themselves as today’s leading photojournalists.

Banks on Cover of New York Times

While much of the country is mired in recession, the town of West Point, Ga., about 80 miles south of Atlanta, has brought in a new Kia Motors Corp. automobile plant, which will collaterally create an estimated 30,000 jobs in this former mill town.
